Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum is designed to enable students to:

• acquire the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning in mathematics and related discipline, and for applications to the real world;

• develop the necessary process skills for the acquisition and application of mathematical concepts and skills;

• develop the mathematical thinking and problem solving skills and apply these skills to formulate and solve problems;

• recognise and use connections among mathematical ideas, and between mathematics and other disciplines;

• develop positive attitudes towards mathematics;

• make effective use of a variety of mathematical tools (including information and communication technology tools) in the learning and application of mathematics;

• produce imaginative and creative work arising from mathematical ideas;

• develop the abilities to reason logically, to communicate mathematically, and to learn cooperatively and independently.

2026

Sec 1 Code for Fun Programme 2026

As part of the school's Experiential Week on 24 and 25 March 2026, our Secondary 1 students participated in the Code for Fun programme—an engaging programme that introduces students to computational thinking, inventive problem-solving, and digital making through AI. This year's theme, Sustainable Living, encouraged students to apply their learning to real-world challenges.

Understanding how AI works in the Real World

The programme begins by demystifying AI. Rather than treating it as a “black box,” students explore how AI makes decisions learning that it relies on patterns, rules, and data processed through algorithmic steps. Through exploring interactive AI-powered web apps, students see firsthand how inputs shape outputs, explore how AI influences everyday decisions and discuss ethical considerations, such as bias, misinformation, and responsible use of AI-generated content.

Mastering Prompt Engineering

A key highlight of the programme is teaching students how to “talk” to AI effectively. Using the RACE framework—Role, Aim, Constraints, and Examples—students learn to craft clear and purposeful prompts. They apply this skill creatively by building a multi-screen Compliment Board app, fostering both technical skills and a positive classroom culture.

The Final Project

Here, students step into the role of designers and developers, using generative AI tools to bring their ideas to life. Guided by design thinking and computational thinking principles, they identify real-world problems, break them down, and build web app prototypes as solutions. Through an iterative process, students assess their apps with peers, gather feedback, and refine their designs. They learn to adapt to new constraints, rethink their approaches, and improve their solutions—mirroring real-world innovation cycles.

More importantly, students reflect on the limitations of AI. They discover that while AI is powerful, it cannot replicate human judgement, creativity, and empathy. By identifying errors and making thoughtful improvements, students learn to work with AI, not rely on it blindly.

Conclusion

The Code for Fun Secondary 2026 programme equips students with the mindset and tools needed to navigate a rapidly changing technological landscape. By combining AI literacy, ethical awareness, and practical innovation, the programme empowers students to become confident creators, critical thinkers, and responsible users of technology.

2026 Regional and National FinLit Competition

 Our Secondary 3 Principles of Accounts (POA) students traded their ledgers for game boards at the 2026 Regional and National FinLit Competition! Hosted by Smart Cloud and Temasek Polytechnic, this annual enrichment program gave our students a chance to put their financial savvy to the test.

Our students had a good experience collaborating and competing with peers from different schools, tackling real-world financial literacy challenges through interactive gameplay.  Congratulations to our two finalists who achieved first positions first at their tables.

2025

STEM Playground Challenge 2025

On 23 October 2025, the Math teachers conducted the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Playground Challenge for two classes of Sec 2G3 students. The activity aimed to spark curiosity and creativity in STEM while promoting teamwork and practical learning.

Students worked in groups of 2 to 5 to design and build a boat using mainly cardboard and recycled materials. The boat had to support at least 1 kg and stay afloat for 20 seconds. This challenge encouraged innovation, problem-solving, and sustainability through the use of recyclable materials.

Students showed great enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the event. At the end of the challenge, three groups received top prizes based on the design and maximum weight that their boats can carry.

The STEM Playground provided a fun and engaging platform for students to apply knowledge creatively and collaboratively, inspiring them to think like future designers and engineers.

ICAS 2025 Participation and Results

On 27 August 2025, a total of 36 students from Secondary 1 to 3 took part in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). This competition provided our students with the opportunity to hone their adaptive thinking skills and benchmark their performance against international standards.

Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO), Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest (SMKC) and Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) 2025

In semester one, selected Secondary One to Three students represented our school in three prestigious national mathematics competitions: SASMO, SMKC and SMO. These competitions provided students with the opportunity to extend their problem solving and adaptive thinking skills beyond the classroom, offering valuable exposure to international standards of mathematical excellence.

We are proud to share that our students have achieved a commendable number of gold, silver, bronze and honourable mention awards. Sec 1 Code for Fun Programme 2025

As part of the school's Experiential Week on 25 and 26 March 2025, our Secondary 1 students participated in the Code for Fun programme—an engaging programme that introduces students to computational thinking, inventive problem-solving, and digital making through AI. This year's theme, Sustainable Living, encouraged students to apply their learning to real-world challenges.

Introducing Computational Thinking

The programme kicked off with a hands-on paper house folding activity, where students followed a set of step-by-step instructions. This exercise mirrored the logic of coding, where a programmer writes a sequence of commands for a computer to execute. Though this task, students experienced how clear and structured instructions lead to the desired outcome, reinforcing the need for precise thinking and problem-solving. This activity laid the foundation for systematic thinking, a key skill in coding and problem-solving.

Hands-On Coding with Micro:bit

Next, students delved into coding with the Micro:bit, experimenting with input and output devices like buttons, sensors, LEDs, and motors. They creatively applied their knowledge by simulating real-world scenarios, such as programming the Micro:bit to mimic an ambulance with flashing red and blue emergency lights and a heart display. Additionally, students used the buttons on the Micro:bit to turn a fan on and off, showing how coding can interact with everyday appliances. This hands-on experience helped students understand how technology can solve real-world problems through practical applications.

Digital Making for a Greener Home

The final challenge was the Digital Making Project, where students used the Design Thinking process to tackle sustainability issues at home. They began by identifying everyday problems, such as excessive electricity usage, and then brainstormed innovative solutions. For example, many students created automated sensors for household appliances like lights, fans, and air conditioners, using coding to program the sensors to activate or deactivate based on room occupancy or environmental conditions. This process involved designing, prototyping, and writing code that allowed the devices to function more efficiently, reducing waste. Through this project, students not only applied their coding skills but also gained valuable insight into how technology can contribute to sustainable living in real-world settings

 Overall, the Code for Fun programme provided our Secondary 1 students with an enriching and purposeful introduction to coding and digital innovation. Beyond learning a technical skill, students tapped into their creativity, practised critical thinking, and tackled real-world problems. By addressing sustainability challenges through hands-on projects, they learned the importance of using technology responsibly and meaningfully. The experience not only sparked curiosity in digital making but also empowered students to become thoughtful innovators who can shape a more sustainable future.

University of New South Wales (UNSW) International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) for Mathematics

STEM Playground Challenge:

Unleashing Creativity through Cardboard Chairs

On 20 May 2024, the Mathematics, Design and Technology, and Science Departments collaborated to organise the much-anticipated STEM Playground Challenge 2024. This collaborative initiative aimed to ignite students’ passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by fostering curiosity, creativity, and teamwork.

The challenge is to design and construct a chair using only cardboard, without the aid of adhesives. Students eagerly formed teams to tackle the task. This challenge not only encouraged innovation but also practical applications of knowledge, reinforcing key concepts such as stability, weight distribution and structural reinforcements.  Using their creativity, students used techniques like stacking, rolling, folding, and ribbing to reinforce their chairs.  Besides construction, students also discussed ideas and problem-solving strategies, each member contributing unique perspective to the team’s success.

At the close of the challenge, students marveled at their creation, each chair a testament to their ingenuity and hard work. The top two creations from each class received prizes as encouragement.  But the excitement did not end there.  Students can look forward to the posting of the best moments on the school’s Instagram page. Beyond the thrill of friendly competition, the STEM Playground 2024 has succeeded in fostering a deeper appreciation for STEM disciplines, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who participated.

Sec 1 Code for Fun Programme

During the school's Experiential Learning Week (19-20 March 2024), Sec 1 students participated in the Code for Fun Programme, a hands-on programme introducing students to coding and computational thinking.

Building a Maze with Computational Thinking

One highlight of the programme was the construction of mazes using cardboard and paper.   Students enhanced their problem-solving skills by breaking down the maze-building process into manageable steps and developing algorithms to navigate the maze.

Exploring Microcontrollers and Smart Home Design

Students also learnt about microcontrollers and external sensors and used them to address real-world problems with sustainable solutions.  Through design thinking, they assembled smart homes that incorporate LED displays and music, tapping on micro:bit technology.

Instilling Responsibility and Technical Proficiency

The programme instilled a sense of environmental responsibility through the theme of sustainability.  Through hands-on projects and real-world applications, students developed technical skills and gained insights into sustainable and responsible innovation, laying a foundation for future learning and problem solving.

Regional Cashflow Competition

Our Secondary Three POA students took part in the Regional Cashflow Competition at St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary on 22 February 2024 and the National Cashflow Competition at National Technological University on 9 March 2024.

 The competitions broadened our students’ learning of POA as they explored topics such as financial literacy and personal financial planning.

 We would like to congratulate Arin Ariana from 3E3 for clinching the 3^rd Prize in the Regional Cashflow Competition.  4 of our students also emerged as top scorers and competed in the finals in the National Cashflow Competition.

2023

STEM Playground Challenge

On 23 May 2023, the Mathematics and Science department conducted the STEM Playground Challenge for Secondary 2 students, a challenge bringing together the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through a collaboration among the Mathematics, Design and Technology, and Science departments. The objectives are to foster students' curiosity, and creativity in STEM activities, while providing opportunities for team learning and practical applications of knowledge.

Students formed groups of 2 to 4 and were tasked with designing and constructing a boat using mainly cardboard and recycled materials. The boat would need to support a mass of 1 kg and stay afloat for 20 seconds. This challenge not only encouraged teamwork but also pushed students to think creatively and find innovative solutions. Students were encouraged to inject their own creative inputs into the boat design challenge. The use of recyclable materials was required, promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness among the students.

The students' enthusiasm and engagement during the STEM Playground were remarkable. At the end of the Challenge, 2 groups were awarded the top prizes for outstanding achievement in the cardboard boat challenge. The STEM Playground witnessed a high level of engagement and enjoyment from all Sec 2 students. Students eagerly embraced the tasks, applying their creativity, critical thinking and diverse skills. This collaborative approach not only fostered effective communication and teamwork but appreciation for the application of knowledge from multiple disciplines in real-world tasks. Hopefully, our students will be inspired to become responsible designers and engineers in the future.

Code for Fun Programme

Sec 1 students enjoyed an enriching learning experience through the Code for Fun Programme from 20 to 21 March 2023. During the two-day workshop, students get to put on their thinking hats as scientists and engineers as they work on real-life problems. The students learnt how to code and create their own smart home using micro:bit technology, integrating various sensors and devices into their projects. The use of recycled materials to construct smart homes encouraged students to think creatively and sustainably. The programme not only equipped the students with valuable coding skills, but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

National CashFlow Competition

A group of our Secondary Three students took part in the National CashFlow Competition organised by NTU on the 11 March 2023. Many schools from all over Singapore participated in this event. Our students enjoyed learning together and have made new friends as they played against students from other schools at the same table. In the process, they acquired valuable financial literacy skills.

SINGAPORE MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD (SMO)

Selected Meridians participated in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) national competition after learning advanced skills in solving competitive Mathematics problems.

The school was awarded the SMO School Commendation Award in recognition of overall participation and performance. 11 Meridians have done well and clinched the Bronze Awards and Honourable Mention Awards in their respective competition categories.

Meridian Mathematics and Financial Literacy Week

The Meridian Mathematics and Financial Literacy Week was a week-long celebration from 28th February to 4th March 2022. The theme for this year is “Mathematics for a Better Tomorrow”. During the week, students across the levels were engaged in a wide array of activities, exploring the key role that Mathematics plays in Sustainability.

On top of these fun-filled activities, students who enjoy cracking puzzles had a go at our online brain teasers – Puzzle-A-Day.

2021

Sec 2 Virtual Learning Journey – Gardens by the Bay

This year, the Sec 2s experienced a virtual Math Learning Journey to Gardens by the Bay on 6 September 2021 from 0900 to 1430. It aims to enhance their learning of Maths beyond the classroom by applying what they have learned to real-life examples, through a virtual tour using Thinklink and SLS. During the tour, students had to solve problems in the two indoor conservatories, namely Cloud Forest and Flower Dome.

Students had the opportunity to apply mathematical skills in real-world contexts, for example, analyse patterns and shapes, estimate measurements using mathematical-modeling techniques, and calculate ticket prices using financial literacy skills.

Students from each level who presented the best solutions to the problems are awarded prizes.

(a) A family tourist from Denmark consisting of 2 adults and a 5 year old boy planned to visit the two Conservatories.

Calculate the total admission fees for the family to the two Conservatories.

(b) If the family decided to also visit the Floral Fantasy, they will be given a 10% discount off on the Floral Fantasy admission tickets. Calculate the total admission fees to the Floral Fantasy for the family.

(c) Calculate the total admission cost for them to go to the two Conservatories and Floral Fantasy.

Meridian Mathematics and Financial Literacy Week

Meridian Mathematics and Financial Literacy Week is a week-long celebration from 8th to 12th March 2021. During the week, students across the levels were engaged through a series of exciting and engaging activities pertaining to Mathematics, POA and Financial Literacy.

The highlights of the week include mathematical challenges such as Riddles, Sudoku, and Tangrams in which students had to pit against one another in solving challenging Math problems and puzzles. Sec 3 students also experienced Math Modelling and Kite Making in which they applied Mathematics to real-life scenarios.

The students had positive learning experiences in the week and learned how to connect better with Mathematics. Some also had the opportunity to learn and apply concepts and skills to solve real-world problems, as well as collaborate and work together as a team. Active participation was evident in all levels, making the week an exciting an engaging experience for all!

During the week, Sec 3 students also played the Principles of Accounts (POA) Business Challenge. The board game gave Sec 3 POA students an introductory experience in managing a business. It provided a simulated business environment that required players to carry out business transactions and make the correct decisions to maximise their profits.
